The fact that you can type the Esc key and then exit Legacy makes me think that there is an error message off-screen that needs your attention before you can continue. Pressing the Esc key is effectively cancelling the message without you ever being aware of what it might say. If the program opens at a maximised size, this may be contributing to the problem. So, press the Esc key and then click on the middle of the 3 buttons in the top right-hand corner of the screen. This restores the window to a 'normal' size. Now, shut down and then restart. The program will open with the window sized as you last left it.
