If it were me and this is just strictly another 2 cents worth,

What I do is this; the death itself is the event, if you have
varying death dates then I use an alternate death date, the
actual obituary itself, usually because of their size goes into
notes and when it comes out in a report, it looks 'right', it 'feels'
right and it has a certain fluidity.

But... as with anything else, what works for some will not work for all.

For sources, I keep all the text for family members together and just repeat
it for each person. I used to split up each line from that family and only
include that in the individuals source detail, but I found it to be
problematic later because I never got to see the entire family together.
I'm glad I stopped doing that a long time ago.

Your idea of adding it to the events is a good idea, but I just add it as
residence and include the occupation or marital status along with the date
of the census and residence.

The census event allows me to see in family reports exactly where people
were at a given time. It's kind of a "location at a glance by year" deal
that is very useful to me. I copy the census event for each family member
and add their personal enumeration details. The entire family is shown in
the source detail Text Comments. The heading on reports follows this
pattern: Census - 1850 - Ulysses, Tompkins County, New York .
