Marion,

Glad it seems to be working out. Re: Source Pictures, you will have to
relink these in the same way as you have your photographs.

Hi Bruce,
Yes have worked that out thanks - when I use Legacy to find the files I go
to All Pictures for the person and then it finds which ones are missing -
the maximum times it comes up for one person is the number of subdirectories
I have under that person.

The only thing I haven't worked out yet is that some photos had been
"attached" via the Picture Centre (where two or more people were in one
photo or related to one document) - I am hoping that will remain attached in
the same way.

My other concern is the "pictures" of the census documents that were
attached to the Assigned Source, Source Detail Picture, as to whether they
will still be attached - not something I am looking at just at the moment!

Thanks, Marion

How many different subdirectories do you have with photos you want Legacy to
display? If you have 20 subdirectories, you just need to link 20 photos,
one in each subdirectory. Once you link just one photo in a subdirectoy,
Legacy will be able to find ALL the rest of the photos in that subdirectory.
You do NOT need to link EVERY photo to Legacy.
Hope that makes sense.

Ron,

Have been sitting here playing - the quickest way it seems so far is to go
to an individual and get Legacy to search for the photos etc - as it is a
new machine with no other photos on it apart from the tree it comes up a lot
quicker than I can direct it to a file. Just means I shall have to do it
person by person over a period - but something I shall remember if I ever go
down this road a fifth time!

By the way - managed to copy the usr files over thanks - the set up is now
as I used to have it on Computer No 2!!!

Thank you for your help and assistance.

Hi Ron,

The hierachy is that the head folder has the name of the person and the
RIN - after that there are sub folders which are labelled Census,
Certificates, Documents, Photos (etc). Within the sub folders are the files.
The only item that has the name of the person and the RIN is the head
folder.

This has worked so far on three computers but this time as I am changing
drive letters and the string it is not working! So to reattach each item I
will have to go to the pictures then find the appropriate folder to
re-attach. When I originally set the structure up many moons ago it seemed
very workable and easy for me to find things - I hadn't contemplated complex
problems when moving to a different drive!

Marion,

I am not too clear as to what you are saying. The number of files may not be
material, unless many of them have the same name – and I do mean *file
names* and not folder names. So if each file name has the RIN attached to it
then they should all be different and by going to each folder in turn Legacy
will link the lot, folder by folder. Or am I missing something?

Thanks Ron - I was hoping there was a simpler way - there are rather a lot
of files.
I have all files structured within a family name, followed by an individual
with their RIN number and within each of those person folders they are all
broken down into Photos, Documents, Certificates, etc etc
It has been easy for me to follow but it now looks as though I shall have to
do as you say.
Thank you again - I will persevere.

Marion,

It is a bit difficult to advise on this as I don't know the way in which you
file names are structured (if at all) and whether there are duplicates in
different folders. However, having put your pictures in folders on your new
machine (where *you* want) If you select a missing picture from within
Legacy, then instead of asking Legacy to browse for it opt to do it
yourself, and since you know where you have put it you can go straight to
it.. Legacy will then remember where all the pictures in that folder are.
You
need to do it once for each folder.

But!! Problems can arise if you have files with the same names in different
folders.

Thank you Tim and Ron,

Hit a small snag. Data files are over fine but of course I am having a
problem with the media. The original location on the old computer was
completely different to what it is going to be on the new computer (we don't
have Documents and Settings in Windows 7 for a start!!) I extracted the
media files and sent them to the new drive and folder on the new computer -
pointed Options / Tools to the folder in E drive but the media is still
looking for C/Documents & Settings etc etc on the old computer.

How do I change where it is supposed to look!!

I followed the instructions on the Legacy Tips Tim but it said to put in C
drive - C is not the drive that will be hosting the media files.

Help once more please....
