I guess you did not pay attention to the screen that the merge process pops up when you stop it. It is that screen that tells you how to undo the merge by going to Edit > Undo Merge... That Undo option only exists during the session where you started the merge. It will not be there once you close Legacy since the temporary backup is deleted, as the Help[ file says.
I will however submit a problem report suggesting that the Help File also include instructions on going to the Edit Menu.
