Please forgive me for asking what is probably a very dumb question and overlooking the obvious on these documents, but this is my first venture into military service records. Much of the information regarding military service I have entered in my database years ago is in need of a major overhaul as I knew nothing about military service, etc, so any advice and guidance is greatly appreciated. I still consider myself a beginner with so much to learn.
Recently, I've found many more documents concerning Civil War military service for several of my ancestors. Many of these documents are Muster Rolls with as many as 15 just for one person and there are a handful of these that I'm not really sure what the document 'title' is. By title, I mean the document isn't clearly 'titled' like Muster Roll, Prisoner Of War, etc. Some just list the name, unit information, rank and several lines of numbers, which I'm assuming are file/reference numbers for other documents. So for the documents that I know what they are, I'm going to enter each document separately as it's own event, but not sure if the title of the document should be the event name or something like Civil War Military Service with the document name as the description, then the date of occurrence, and the location listed on the document, with any other notes entered in the notes section for that event. Or is there another way to handle these documents? And not sure how to enter this type of occurrence where a couple of my ancestors were civilians that were taken by Union troops to serve as guides, etc., and then taken prisoner. I haven't located the actual documents, but these occurrences have been in several books written about the specific battle, which supports the family stories. Thank you again for your expertise!
