I am replying to thank you all for your help. I will add the inability of Legacy to do sorted lists by event dates to my list of weaknesses in the program.
Workarounds would seem to be possible if one has Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excell, Open Office, etc. and knows how to work with those programs. However, this would exclude most of the people in my classes. Other suggestions that I will give to those who have this need would be the following. For those who wish to expend the funds, Legacy sells GENViewer which claims to be able to "Sort names, ages, places, etc. by column with the click of a button." So a Gedcom file exported form Legacy could be used with GENViewer to obtain a sorted list. Personal Ancestral File, with is a free program available from the LDS Church, can produce custom reports sorted on a wide range of fields. A Gedcom file could be imported into Personal Ancestral File to create a list sorted by event date. Ancestral Quest is also available in a free version, and can also do similar custom reports. I have paid versions of both RootsMagic and Ancestral Quest on my desktop which feature a view similar to Legacy's Index view. Both are customizable, but in addition the view can be sorted on any column. And there are those who do have two or more such programs because of these kinds of needs. I have them because I work with cousins who have them. But for many, having two different genealogy programs would not seem sensible. Again, thank you all. Dean L.
