I was recently granted access, as a non-LDS member. The only difference I am aware of is that non-LDS members do not have access to the LDS information of the people. This is information on special ordinances that are part of the rituals of the LDS church.
You can see all the events and family links for the people and you can combine people when you find that there are duplicates. This combination of people to eliminate duplication is one of the big, for me anyway, benefits of nFS. It is an attempt to sort out all the duplication of records that arose in the IGI and Ancestral file because of independent submissions by LDS members over the years.
