Mary

Thanks for this tidbit. What a great find. I downloaded the trial version and
in 5 min I was up and running with it. My first try was some scanned (300 dpi)
typed notes sent to me via email in a jpg format. There were 3 paragraphs
(approx. half page) and there was not one single edit required. Within seconds
of bringing the image to the screen, I had the following in the research notes
for my grandfather:

” ITEMS IN ELBERT LEE JOHNSON'S TRUNK:

1. A piece of slate approximately the size of a sheet of paper but with
irregular edges
because pieces had been broken off. This slate was brought from Scotland to the
United
States by the ancestor who came from the old country. Slates were used for
teaching/learning writing and arithmetic. Since it was the custom for such
"treasures" to
be passed from a father to his oldest son, the slate must have passed from
Joshua Johnson
(the oldest son?) to his oldest son, John M. Johnson and then to Elbert Lee
Johnson, the
oldest son of John M.

2. Two letters written by John M. Johnson to his 7- or 8-year-old son, Elbert
Lee
Johnson, from Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. John M. was a soldier (we do not know
which side he joined) in the Civil War battles of Lookout Mountain and the
letters told
his son that his orders were for him take a wagon out on the battlefield at
night and, under
the cover of darkness, pick up the wounded and dead. These bodies were hauled to
middle Tennessee (in the direction of Murfreesboro).

Unfortunately, Elbert Lee's trunk was stolen after his death and the family
does not have
possession of these treasures.

Marian,

There is a great utility created by ABBYY OCR software, priced at only $10,
that will do a fantastic job of converting text seen on your monitor to text on
your windows clipboard. I use it every day I work on research in Legacy and
consider it one of the best utilities I’ve ever used. It is called ‘ABBYY
Screenshot Reader’ and you can find it here:
http://www.abbyy.com/screenshot_reader/screenshot_capture/

You can also try before you buy, so you’ll know if it’s something you would use.
