Thanks Michele. That kind of feedback is very helpful to us newbie who are
trying to get organized.

So… how about a short summary of filing strategies?

MASTER SOURCES: Geoff’s webinars suggest naming all master sources with the
location (in reverse order) first, then perhaps a date, then some sort of
source name. How do you feel about that?
I do mine differently than Geoff does but his is just as organized. You
need to find a system that makes sense to you so that you know exactly where
to look to see if you already have that source. I have mine organized by
TYPE first, then LOCATION. Here are some examples...
Cemetery Records - GA - Columbia Co - Bugg Family Cemetery
Cemetery Records - GA - Columbia Co - Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church
Cemetery
Cemetery Records - GA - McDuffie Co - Marshall Baptist Church Cemetery
Cemetery Records - GA - Richmond Co - Westover Memorial Park
Cemetery Records - MS - Forrest Co - Seal Family Cemetery
Cemetery Records - MS - Forrest Co - Simmons Family Cemetery
Cemetery Records - MS - Lamar Co - Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery

Census Records - Federal - AL - Marshall Co - 1850
Census Records - Federal - AL - Marshall Co - 1860
Census Records - Federal - GA - Columbia Co - 1820
Census Records - Federal - GA - Columbia Co - 1830
Census Records - Federal - GA - Columbia Co - 1840
Census Records - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1840
Census Records - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1850
Census Records - Federal - MS - Jackson Co - 1840
Census Records - Federal - MS - Jackson Co - 1850

Marriage Records - GA Georgia Marriages, 1699-1944 (ancestry database)
Marriage Records - GA - Columbia Co (certificates)
Marriage Records - GA - Lincoln Co (certificates)
Marriage Records - GA - Richmond Co (certificates)
Marriage Records - MS - Marion Co - Abstracts of Marion Co, MS 2nd District
Marriage Records (book)
Marriage Records - MS - Marion Co - (certificates)

Death Records - GA - Columbia Co (certificates)
Death Records - GA - Columbia Co - Starling Funeral Home (sexton records)
Death Records - GA - Columbia Co - obituaries Published by the Christian
Index 1880 - 1899 (book)

They will sort in order alphabetically within each group and by date

DOCUMENT FILENAMES: Geoff, and most everybody else, seem to say “do what you
want”. As renaming is somewhat painful in Legacy it would be nice to set up
a consistent system early on. Especially for non-picture files which cannot
be renamed thru Picture Center. What do you recommend?
Again, I differ with Geoff here. He has his in files by location, USA >
Georgia > Columbia County
I have mine set up like my sources, by record type then location. This is
for DOCUMENTS. For photographs I simply have a file entitled PHOTOGRAPHS
and then file name is the person. If there is more than one person in the
photo, it is named for the person that is closest related to me. I use
female maiden names unless their maiden name is unknown and then I will put
Mrs

MaddoxChesleyB01
MaddoxRobertReese01
MaddoxRobertReese02
MaddoxZenobia01
SimmonsDemaris01
SimmonsSilas01
SimmonsSilas02

These are the thorniest issues for me as a beginner. I already have quite a
quagmire..

Anyone else who would like to make suggestions? Please do so!

Thanks to everyone else who takes the time to read and respond to any or
our, often recurring, questions.

Cheers.

I don’t put any of those things in the events. I write short narrative
biographies on people and that is where I weave that information in. I don’t
like making it sterile and clinical by just listing them as events. I use
the events for specific things that happened at specific times (census
records, tax rolls, that sort of thing). Legacy has a Webinar entitled,
“Ready, Set, Write! Share Your Family's Story” which really explains this
concept well.

I use the general notes tab to write their short bio (or long bio in the
case of those people in my direct line) and I use the research notes to keep
track of all the things I am looking at, need to look at, theories etc.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Custom Event Names

Hi again everyone. Can some of you share with me what names or titles you
use for the following as custom events?

Hobbies
Interests
Causes
Famous Persons

I want to be specific enough without getting too many separately-named
custom events on the database, unless they are needed, so that's my premise
here. So, I thought maybe I'd pick your brains. Thanks!
