I fully realised that - hence my statement that I would normally use the single bar icon when I have already put information in the vital event fields and was using a source to update only some of the fields. What I didn't realise was that ALL, included all events AS WELL. In a way I agree with Jenny that it is the placement of the icon that is confusing as it seems to be associated with the vital events fields, whereas the additional events seem to be separate and in some cases you can't even see all of the events without having to scroll down. And logically, how often would one have a source that applied to EVERY event listed, whereas having a source that applied to every field of vital events, where all those fields are visible at the one time to me seems quite likely. Mind you, if I had customised the individual view and changed one of those events displayed to say, military service, then I would be unlikely to have ever used the three bar icon to add a source.
