Turning off the switch does not completely remove all power until all
the capacitors on the pcb's have had time to bleed down to 0 potential.
  Until then there is a very real possibility of RAM maintaining
information that you really want flushed, hence the need to leave the
power switch off for a few seconds.  I also like to allow the HD to spin
down.  Don't know if that matters but it can't hurt.
