If you enter the details for the possible parent (Name, birth, death
etc.) as an unlinked person (Use CTRL-N to do so) then their details,
and the source of that information will be recorded for later if you are
able to prove the connection. I would also, as Sherry suggested create a
To Do for the child saying I need to research whether Father (RIN xxx)
is really the father. That will tell you who to link in as the father if
the research proves the connection.

An added benefit is you can connect that unlinked person to any family
identified in the source you are using (wife and other children for
example). If you have that kind of data entered then do NOT link the
child to the father, open the family and link the child as a child of
the family. If you are on the child and link to the father you will
likely create a second marriage for that father and only the son will be
a child.
