Elizabeth,

How many generations are you planning to use? That might make a difference
regarding suggestions on how to present the material. On the really early
generations, you might create an ancestor report. Then bring down the family
from this couple to show descendants. There are only two descendant style
narratives in Legacy, either the outline descendant (called the Descendant
Narrative report in Legacy) or grouped by generation (called the Descendant
Book report in Legacy). Maybe a simple outline descendant chart without boxes
at the beginning of the descendant narrative reports would allow for a visual
perspective of the material to follow.

My entire family is very, very interested in our family tree so I want the book
to be inclusive and understandable. They have shared their memories, helped
transcribe, helped with research and more. We all want to have a very detailed
book that can be enjoyed for generations to come. This is the reason I am
trying so hard to figure out a good way to do it.

I haven't found a way to do it in Legacy so I have been copying/pasting
information into a .rtf file but it doubles the 'handling' time of the
information (once to put it into Legacy for storage and then to copy/paste it).

Maybe someone can help me with the issue of 'how/where' to add the information
about the branches of our tree that are not in our direct line........

Do I make separate chapters for each of those surnames? Do I add them as
'extra' chapters in the spot where that surname comes up in the book? Or is it
best to add them at the back of the book?....???

I'm really in a muddle about all of this and would appreciate ideas from anyone
who has produced a family tree as a book.

Elizabeth,

I have started to enter the Census Events on the marriage. Maybe that would
reduce those at least. And then don't also use the Residence and Occupation
events... just put those in the Census Event Notes...? Or if you want the
Census Events on the children, but not on this particular report, I think
there's a way to uncheck "Events" for children...? And isn't there a format
choice for Events? something less list-like? Hmm... you've got me ready to
test it out myself! ;) Good luck!

Syble, and group,

I am also trying to create a book for my family and understand exactly what you
are saying. There is ssoooooooo much repetition of information such as Events
and Census data!!!

I want my book to be more of a 'biographical sketch of each family', tying the
whole family together rather than a long list of facts (Events, etc) but I have
not figured out how this can be done.

I have "lots and lots" of newspaper articles, obituaries, family stories, etc
that I want included as part of the narrative, not entered as a long list of
Events. And I want the census data to be for the whole family, not each person
separately.

Surely there must be folks on this list who have created narrative books for
their families who might be able to help us........I hope so.
