Elizabeth,

Have you thought of setting out your basic narrative, including s a few
trees and pictures, then putting detailed info like census data in an
appendix, so that folk can look it up if they want to, but not get
distracted by it if they don't? This is how academic papers work and it
is generally pretty successful.
