Entering a date as dd Mmm yyyy/zz makes Legacy assume that you're entering a
double-dated date. This is controlled by the double-dating options on the Dates
page of the options. To get Legacy to accept a date in this format, the first
year *must* be before 1752.

In the case of 17 Jun 1938-9, you are entering a date range in which the second
date is the year 0009.

I think you should re-read the helpfile topic "Entering Dates in Date Fields",
where a whole lot of information and suggestions can be found.
