Thanks to all for the advice.  Generic > Online database seems to be the
way to go.

The info from that site seems to be a mixture of census data, FreeBMD
data and church transcriptions.  Some of it is a bit flaky, but at least
they say where the info comes from.  That way, most of it can be checked
directly.
