Ron, I have been mulling over your answer.

I agreed with the idea of Joan using "online database" because the online
database she was using contained a congomeration of data from many sources.

However, if I'm reading your answer correctly (which I may not be!), you're
saying because she found the data in an online database, she should use that
template, right?

Yes

I get my census images from an online database (or at least online
repository),
but I don't use the online database template for sure. Likewise, state
data.

The answer was not necessarily intended to be prescriptive. I do not
particularly accept the necessity for source standards. I use the templates
for convenience only, and often leave fields empty or change their title. It
is my view that as long as a source is clear, accurate and enables someone
else to find the source then that is fine.

Just because it's available online doesn't mean you should use the online
database template, right?

Not all sources which are on-line are in databases, so the answer is No".

Or are you really just trying to clarify what to select for the "format" on
any
source template?

I was answering a specific question for a particular record on a specific
site

I'm trying not to worry too much, but I don't want to record my sources in
such
a way as to be misleading to those who would come after me; don't want to
cause
them to not be able to find it themselves.

Which is the correct approach, and much more important than bothering about
whether a template is the 'correct one' - whatever that may mean!

Thanks!

No problem!

Joan,

It would seem that you have a misapprehension regarding sourcing data. The
format in which the original data was recorded is immaterial, the templates
only require that you specify the format *from which you received the data*.
In the case of the Weald website it is an on-line database (I haven't looked
so I don't know if it contains images). Thus the template is one of the
online databases.
