Thanks Dennis,
This appears to be the best of a bad bunch!  The only real downfall is that the 
report uses John Rees and John Loring throughout which is a bit stilted, but at 
least it avoids the confusion and can be restricted to the instances where it 
is needed for clarification and doesn't affect everyone globally.  It would be 
nice if I had the option on a case by case basis of using full given name or 
first given name only in the marriage sentence.

Have you tried tricking Legacy into seeing both names as a single name?
You might be able to do this by separating them with a non-breaking
space (Alt+255 on numeric keypad I think) instead of a regular space?
