Vicki, I love Legacy. I converted from FTM in 2004 using a GEDCOM file. I only had basic data at the time, so sources and images weren't an issue. How many people do you have in your file? Yes, leave it all in one family file.
RIN numbers are assigned automatically. This is not a number I use for filing, say, hardcopy, though I have heard some on this list do that. I just recently went through a reorganization effort on my data... electronic and hardcopy. I recommend taking a look in the archives (see links below) for information on the 4-color system (the name escapes me!). It's basically by family group, and I have come to LOVE it! I just makes perfect sense to me. (Though I use 6 colors and binders, while it uses 4 colors and folders.) Start by organizing the physical, then the image files (use naming conventions?), then start to enter everything into Legacy. If you get the papers organized in a fashion that makes it easy for YOU to find things, then you won't be re-doing anything later on. (or at least you won't be re-doing as much... haha) Be sure to use the to-do's as you enter, because that's when you see a piece of data is missing for someone and want to stop and find it/do research. Don't forget to check the webinars available for entering some of the "trickier" data. Read about the source and event clipboards to make the job go more quickly, especially as you are applying source citations. I have been using FTM for years. Love to do research but until I purchased FTM, did not know what to do with all the information that I collected. When I started entering info, alot of it has not been entered correctly. My sources are not entered correctly and all of my individuals are tied together, no seperate files for each family. One large file. I feel that I need to change programs because I just purchased a new laptop and it is running on Win 7 64 bit and the FTM version that I have is not compatible, and it seems like each new upgrade with FTM, it just gets worse. Also, I have failed to keep reference logs on my research for each family. My questions are. 1. Should I convert my file using GEDCOM files, or, because things are in such a mess, should I just install Legacy and basicly start over? Copying my information, but at the same time completing the sources, research logs, etc that needs to be done. 2. Number system. If I do convert, how does Legacy handle the RIN numbering system? I am assuming it will automatically assign numbers when the file is downloaded. Since my files are not in a numbered system, I need to redo those anyway. I would like to scan what I can to digital, but I will still need to file originals. I am going to further my knowledge by taking courses and at least getting certified, so have even thought that I should just take some courses on organizing my work first before I state to transfer my files.
