Jennifer,
Alas, you have discovered the enigma of having multiple trees spread around
the internet with multiple editors! That is why I have one master database
in Legacy which is uploaded to MY WEBSITE and though I allow users to
register for a user account to view information on living individuals in
their BRANCH of my family tree, I only allow them to do tentative updates
for administrative review to people, places, and sources only. No one is
allowed to add individuals, they must send me the information to update my
file. I don't upload to ancestry.com as they then become the owners of that
tree.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Workflow for Updating from Multiple Sites

Hello! I apologize if this has been covered here before, but I was not able
to find it after reading through the available archives. I have been
struggling with the best way to keep my Legacy data up-to-date with multiple
family trees on ancestry.com (2 separate trees of my own, as well as shared
trees maintained by other family members), myheritage.com, and on geni.com.
One of the problems is that there are multiple family members working on
each of these trees along with me, making changes and adding new
information. It is getting very confusing because I have different
information for the same people now in each of these places, but I do not
know how to easily combine all of them into Legacy, especially with over
5,000 people to cover. I have tried downloading the family trees from each
of the sites, but then when I pull them into Legacy, I have to merge 5,000
people again each time. Now, some of them do automerge, which is helpful,
but because of the differences between the formats, many end up still
needing to be merged by hand. It is one thing to go through this once or
twice to get the people into the database initially, but too time consuming
to go through this process over and over, as the information in the trees
online keeps changing when updated by others.

My question for all of you Legacy users who have family trees online,
perhaps in multiple different sites like me, is how do you deal with this
issue in order to make sure the information is up-to-date and as accurate as
possible in your Legacy database? Have you found an efficient workflow that
can account for the ever-changing data online that is added by other people?
Please let me know if my questions or situation is not making sense, so that
I can try to explain better what I mean. Thank you!
