Thanks for the suggestions. I'm reminded that I can use Legacy in a flexible manner, and not feel that if I list a Census Event for one person, I have to do it for every ancestor I find.

I would use the census as a source for the AKA, date of birth, place of birth, relationship to parents etc. If you want to make it clear, you could either write a short note at the bottom of the census event such as [Jesse Doe, male is actually Bessie Doe, female as evidenced by....] Or your could do it this way... Jesse Doe, son [sic], white, male [sic], age 4, single, born in MS, both parents born in MS That shows that you are recording the census exactly but you recognize that there is an error. The only things I will "sic" is gender and relationships [obvious mistakes].
