You don't need to be LDS to use the familysearch.org site. There are
some databases which are restricted by virtue of the license that the
church holds from the owner but most are open.

Ohio deaths need to be signed for but that is no problem. You
establish an account and find a name and password and Bob's your
uncle.

If you get the old site when you enter familysearch.org just look for
"try the new site" and just go for it and enjoy, and don't let them
amount of information buffalo you. I use this site
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/birthindexes-eur.html#c1876416
to see what is online for free, there are American (all the Americas)
European and more and it contains links to the individual db at
familysearch. I can not too highly recommend you search by database so
you don't get overwhelmed with extraneous info.
