This is what I do. I copied and pasted this straight from my file. This is the 1840 census in Columbia Co, GA
John Lewis 2 free white males age 5 to under 10 [Robert and Littleberry] 1 free white male age 30 to under 40 [John] 1 free white female age 40 to under 50 [Letticia] Here is one that contains an unknown 1840 Perry Co, MS Silas Simmons 2 free white males age 5 to under 10 [John and Benjamin] 1 free white male age 10 to under 15 [James] 1 free white male age 15 to under 20 [Abner] 1 free white male age 20 to under 30 [William] 1 free white male age 40 to under 50 [Silas] 1 free white female under 5 [unknown] 1 free white female age 5 to under 10 [Melinda] 1 free white female age 15 to under 20 [Nancy] 1 free white female age 20 to under 30 [Mary] 1 free white female age 40 to under 50 [Janet] And yes, I do attach the event to the persons I know them to be. Michele From: Neil Bell [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, March 18, 2012 8:23 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [LegacyUG] Pre-1850 US Census data I am sure most all USA researchers know that for census records prior to 1850, the only individual identified by name is the "head of household". Other family members are only specified by approximate age and the number of people in that age range. So my question is: if you are "fairly certain" that a female in the 1840 census in an age range is the same as the spouse specified in the 1850 census and the ages are consistent, do you record that 1840 census record in the spouse record? Obviously since you cannot be certain of that fact, what do you do? I am curious as to other people's opinion.
