I do not do exactly the same as Michele and Terri ;) but I am now considering
it.

I agree with the earlier Ouji board comment on those early censuses. ;)

One thing I do differently, that hasn't been mentioned, is I will enter the
Census as a Marriage Event if the couple is enumerated together. So, for the
specific original question about adding an event for the spouse if you're
reasonably sure that tick mark is her......... I would add the Marriage Event
and describe that the wife is represented by the such-and-such tick mark. (I
tend to enter an event for each child, tho.)

Being a semi-retired analyst, I LOVE looking at a family unit through
consecutive old census listings and trying to figure out the estimated birth
ranges, who married out, etc. I have a pretty strong hypothesis on the older
siblings and younger half-siblings of my 3rd-great-grandfather! ;) (Obviously,
this is one reason I love this hobby.)

This is what I do. I copied and pasted this straight from my file.

This is the 1840 census in Columbia Co, GA

John Lewis
2 free white males age 5 to under 10 [Robert and Littleberry]
1 free white male age 30 to under 40 [John]
1 free white female age 40 to under 50 [Letticia]

Here is one that contains an unknown

1840 Perry Co, MS

Silas Simmons
2 free white males age 5 to under 10 [John and Benjamin]
1 free white male age 10 to under 15 [James]
1 free white male age 15 to under 20 [Abner]
1 free white male age 20 to under 30 [William]
1 free white male age 40 to under 50 [Silas]
1 free white female under 5 [unknown]
1 free white female age 5 to under 10 [Melinda]
1 free white female age 15 to under 20 [Nancy]
1 free white female age 20 to under 30 [Mary]
1 free white female age 40 to under 50 [Janet]

And yes, I do attach the event to the persons I know them to be.

Michele
