Graham, Without actually seeing the person it's hard to know. Offhand, I would suspect that either there are multiple birth dates for the father, or the son, or perhaps multiple parent links. Do any of those apply?
Since it's public data (deceased people) perhaps if you posted the NFS person ID others could look at it and comment.
