Thank you James, yes it has helped a lot. Your para. 1) is also my
understanding.

2) is new to me, as I never used Ancestry in that way, and simply upload a
basic GEDCOM from Legacy i.e. no sources. Given what you say, I am now
unsure whether or not screenshots would be of help, but your explanation has
clarified your intention and process, for which I am grateful.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] selecting a few new people to upload to ancestry

Hmm... It will be a few days, but I could capture some screen shots
of my example tree.

I guess I'm saying a couple of things...

1) The only sync I am aware of between Ancestry and a home based
database is their own Family Tree Maker program. (i.e. no sync with
Legacy). Your only options are to manually keep the trees in sync or
upload a GEDCOM. When uploading a GEDCOM, this will create a new
tree, not sync with an existing one.

2) Every time you upload a GEDCOM (at least one from Legacy), you have
to relink all the Ancestry Hints you may have had in an older tree
(census images, milliary docs, etc). This is where my scripts come
in. I have some GreaseMonkey scripts that will display Ancestry's
database ids. I save these in my Leagacy file in the File Id field.
I then have some Notetab macros (Notetab calls them clips) that I use
to pre-process my GEDCOM before upload to Ancestry. So, open the
GEDCOM in Notetab and run the necessary macros I want on my file. One
such macro is to rename the Legacy File Id (REFN GEDCOM tag) to the
one Ancestry uses to link their hits to your tree (_APID tag). Then,
when you upload the GEDCOM to Ancestry all the Hints you've used in
your research are also linked in your new uploaded tree. (If you
dowload a GEDCOM from Ancestry an load into Legacy, it will put those
same _APID into the File Id field too.)

The motivation behind my scripts was to try and automate the process
from Legacy to Ancestry and make it as easy as possible. It is not
ideal, but is not bad. In this way, I enter data only once in Legacy,
then upload a new tree to Ancestry occasionally. When I use Ancestry
to do research I save to the sandbox until I get a change to add the
information to my Legacy database. Again, I do all my data entry via
Legacy only.

Hope that helps
