Yes, to me the keyboard is essential if I'm going to be keying in anything during a research trip. --Paula

Brian, You MAY want to consider a "convertible"(?) also. Though these seem to be disappearing with the arrival of the tablets. A "convertible" (don't remember if that's the right name) is a full blown laptop that also allows you to either: * pivot the screen and then lay it on top of the keyboard so it can works like a tablet (though a bit thicker) * detach the screen and use it alone (like a tablet) Why consider this? Some folks find the lack of physical keyboard on a tablet to be a hindrance and they end up buying an external keyboard anyway. So then you have 2 pieces to carry, vs having the keyboard built in for a convertible. Of course I've also seen some nifty "attachments/cases/covers" for tablets that include a physical keyboard! The advantage of going with a tablet and buying a separate keyboard is if you are going someplace where you KNOW you won't need a keyboard, it is much lighter to use and less to carry around. Now, with that being said, I've never used a convertible nor a tablet - so I can't any make recommendations. I'd suggest you find a friend that has a tablet and ask if you can "play" with it. Especially try the virtual keyboard to do data entry. Try a few different models if you can. (Trying that at a store, in my opinion, is not a valid test. Too much pressure to get in/out of the store by the sales people. Plus it is such a different environment.) That will give you an idea of how much you will (or won't) miss a physical keyboard. Some folks are fine without a physical keyboard, some can't live without it. Good luck.
