I have found that when cleaning up a merge, I need to unlink instead of delete.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Frozen screen
I recently merged two family files together and it did not go well.  I started
deleting the incorrect marriage mergers BUT when I attempt to delete a file
(that was linked elsewhere that I didn't know), an error message appears that
states "file not found" and the screen freezes.  In order to get out, I have to
reboot my computer and all changes I've previously made are lost.  Any
suggestions?

Vera,

I suspect that I am not alone in saying that I
have difficulty in fully understanding exactly how the problems have arisen, and
the exact steps taken to try and resolve the matter.

May I suggest that you take a look at the On-Line
Trouble Shooting Help>Error By Description, you will find the link under the
Legacy Home Tab.

By all means come back to us with more detail
regarding how you merged, and the deletions.
