I exported a gedcom file so that I could upload it to Family Tree DNA. But
only alternate names are being downloaded to the gedcom file. Therefore if
someone looks at my gedcom, nicknames are all that are showing for any name I
entered an alternate name for, not the name I entered into the main body of the
record. Several of my records have people who have a legal name but are called
something else. I have recorded those extra names or spellings in the
alternate name location. But that is what the gedcom is exporting, not the
name in the main record.

You haven't made it clear what you are trying to do, but if you mean you want
to create a Master Source and then create another one with much of the same
information, then all you need do is create the first one, then edit it and
save it as a NEW Source.

What I do, to avoid accidents, is create the first source and save it.
Then click on Edit, type in a new Source List Name and then immediately click
Save, selecting "Apply the changes to a new copy", then I click Edit for the
new Source and make all the further changes I need to.
Saving after just changing the Source List Name means that if by any chance I
click the wrong button and apply the changes to the original Source then I have
only "mucked up" the Name and not the whole Source.
