Thanks for all of your help.  I followed Thelma's Legacy Help suggestion
and reinstalled the database file via ... File > Export > Legacy File.  It
worked.  The merging error has disappeared.  Thanks.

It would help if you detailed the full error message - is it by any chance
"Runtime error cannot find file " - if so this is an Access error.  Exactly
how are you trying to merge? I take it that you are aware that you cannot
use merge for two records from the same database?
