You are correct, Virginia, I haven't tried to create a timeline for this purpose, but it should be possible.
Use the Chronology tab, and click the 'Select Background Timelines' then the 'Add a Timeline File' followed by 'New'. Use the Help file to find out how to add one. It is quite straight forward.
