I was going through old LUG messages while cleaning out my in boxes. I see in 
the Archives that you never received a reply to this question.

The event clipboard is not the same as the source clipboard. When you set up an 
event clipboard entry Legacy creates a temporary pointer to the selected event. 
It does NOT make a copy it simply records the index value for the event in the 
event table. This pointer is only temporary and is not remembered when Legacy 
closes. The advantage of this method is that when you paste the event you also 
paste all the source information linked to the event so you do not have to 
reattach sources to a pasted event.

This behaviour does mean that if you delete the event which is on the event 
clipboard you can no longer paste that event since the pointer no longer points 
to an existing event.
