I use and can recommend QuickOffice Pro HD. However, it's possible to view a spreadsheet or other types of Office documents on the iPad without any additional apps using the built-in Quick View. You can initiate this from any app that has access to the document. For example, if you send the Excel file to yourself as an attachment and open it with the Mail app on the iPad, then tap the attachment icon, it will display the spreadsheet in Quick View. If you tap the icon with the arrow at the top right of the screen, you can then choose to open the document in other apps which support the document type. So if you have QuickOffice installed, you can select it here.
Note also that if you attach the spreadsheet as a document in Legacy (from the Picture Gallery), and select "Copy Documents" in the Families Sync settings, the spreadsheet file will be embedded in the SQLite file transferred to the iPad. You can then open it in Families from the appropriate screen, again initially in Quick View. You may need to increase the maximum document size in the Families Sync settings - it currently allows up to 20Mb. I am in the process of entering these records into Legacy (slowly). I would love to bring this spreadsheet file over to the iPad as well but can't seem to find a conversion program on the iPad that will work. I found one (iSpreadsheet) that said it would work with Excel files but it uses Google Docs/Google Drive and Google Drive can't handle the size of the Excel file. Don't even suggest OpenOffice as OO cannot handle the Excel file in a windows environment (it is too slow).
