Yes, I don't link the images to Legacy. I used to and had over 15,000 source citations with linked images. With one click I un-linked them all. Because linking them is way too labour-intensive. On top of that if you move them or rename them you're starting all over again in many cases. I think my present method is much better.
I have a folder for each marriage named with their MRIN. Inside each folder are all the documents for that marriage. When I search their MRIN, the folder comes up in a nano-second and I get the whole view of their life in chronological order. In other words, I can see all their images at one time, instead of clicking through Legacy looking at one here and one there and I have a better perspective. I also have all these MRIN folders nested so going to one MRIN folder puts me right into the family line if I want to look over at the parents, grandparents, siblings or children. Or gather together all the files for the "descendants of..." starting at any point in the family tree. Since not all files for a person will be in their MRIN folder I can also search by embedded keywords and Windows and various other programs will pull all files for that person from wherever they exist on my computer. Keywords can mean names of people but also, for instance, type of record, or location by city, state, country, etc. There's lots of ways of slicing and dicing this. eg, If I wanted to narrow a search to a particular township and just look at those records. Or if I then wanted to narrow that location to a particular type of record. And it all goes on in split-seconds.
