Hi, Listers,

I probably shouldn’t be spending my time or yours telling you about this --
it’s just a
minor warning! But you may want to know that tho’ the Relationship
Calculator is a great tool, it’s not perfect!

I recently used the Relationship Calculator (RC) to see how I was related
to “X”(b1809-d1884). The RC told me we were not related, that “X” was my
“3rd great-grandfather's wife's step nephew.”

But since his grandmother was the sister of my 5x ggf, I knew we were
related.

So I used the RC in steps:
1) to get “X” ‘s relationship to my 4x ggf (result: 1stCousin,1x removed),
2) to get “X” ‘s relationship to my 2xggm (result: 2C), and
3) to get “X” ‘s relationship to me (new result: 2C,4r).

Actually it said “X” & I have “3 common ancestors”:
1) FNU McC__ & (wife) -- (result: 2C,4r)
2) FNU McC__ & (wife) -- (result: 2C,5r)
Note that 1) & 2) are the same as I’m descended from two different sons --
lots of cousinly intermarriages)
3) “Not Related” - The Descriptive Link says he’s my “3rd
great-grandfather's wife's step nephew.”

I think on the first try, the RC is supposed to come up with the closest
link --not the most remote!!
