You don't lose *data*. As I stated, gedcoms will lose the SW formatting, Dates Added and Modified and History - the latter three because you have actually created a *new* Legacy database.
For some people, the dates and history are very important and this is something that they need to remember when backing up. Plus, the Backup in Legacy retains the ancillary files that work with your Family File - such as Research Guidance Results, IGI search (which sadly can no longer be done), FamilySearch results, Relationships, etc. You can see the list on the Customize Backup window. None of the information in these ancillary files are preserved in a gedcom since they're not actually part of the .FDB file which you create the gedcom from.
