Thanks, Paul. That detail is extremely helpful. It remains to be seen, I guess, whether Tel Gen will see sufficient market potential to release a Windows 8 (probably RT) compatible version of Families. It looks like most tablets and smartphones would run RT, I would think the market for an expensive tablet that can run full blown Windows 8 would be limited.
I have no plans to buy a new desktop/laptop, or upgrade my current computer from Windows 7, but it’s nice to know that it won’t be an issue. Yes, Legacy does run on Windows 8 on a PC (I'm doing it) as will most all "regular" programs that have run under Windows 7. A few programs, like those that have special graphic needs, may need updated drives but those should be more an exception rather than the rule. All my core apps, Quicken, Office 2010, Browsers, Legacy, etc have been fine. Now, regarding the two versions of Windows 8, that is also correct. There will be 'standard' Windows 8 and then Windows 8 RT. On Friday, the Standard Windows 8 for PC will be released. The table that Microsoft releases on Friday will be running Windows RT. Here is the difference (as I understand it so far) Windows RT will run any app that has been specifically designed for Windows 8 and/or RT. So, for those "new" apps, you will be able to run them on any Windows 8 / Windows RT tablet, PC, or phone. A Windows RT tablet or phone will NOT run apps that have been specifically designed for that OS. In January or February of 2013, Microsoft is supposed to release a table that will be running the full blown version of Windows 8. That device (which will be expensive) WILL run programs that were designed for Windows 7 and prior. So, it's a two step process. If you want to jump into Windows 8 on your PC, you can do that now and still run all your old apps. As I mentioned before, I'm running Windows 8 on my PC at home and Legacy and my other related genealogy programs all seem to work fine. If you want the combined PC/Tablet/Phone experience across all your programs you'll need to wait until the new tablet is released in 2013.
