Louise, If I understand you correctly, you are basically seeking to find out the difference between lumpers and splitters. There has been much discussion on this subject and I suggest that you search the archives (URL at the very end) using either of them as a search term.
Basically, a Lumper is someone who has one Master Source for each country or state, for example, and then adds the information relating to a specific family in the Detail. An extreme Splitter would have a new Master Source for every family. There are then all the possibilities in-between! In the "Watch Geoff Live: Adding a Census Record", Geoff indicates that the specific source info such as city, page, actual text and picture should be included in the Source detail. If I do that for the census report applying to one family and have a different census form applying to a different family on a different sheet, shouldn't the information in the Source detail change? If it does, what happens, when you select the source a second time and change the detail? Does Legacy retain the 1920 U.S. Census as a basic source but have several different details?
