Pat, somehow an unknown spouse must be in there.  Go to the spouse icon for the 
individual.  You will probably find "Unknown" as a spouse.  Click on that 
spouse and then Delete on the right side of the spouse listing screen.  You 
will then find the option lit up to select never married and never had any 
children.
