I downloaded Foxit, which did not change the spacing problem, but instead
added a new one:

Footnote numbers, previously superscript, are now showing as subscript.
Text following the supersciprt>subscript number shows in superscript
position (though the font size remains standard).  This occurs regularly
after a footnote number and continues for the remainder of the line (or
until a word is bolded, at which point the script drops to regular position.

Wish I could send screenshots -- I know there's a way to do this via a url
but I don't know how or what to do.
