Or it could have been one of the many documents which were duplicated in official records but later destroyed in a fire in 1973. My father's military service papers belong to that group. The only place to see his official discharge papers are in his files and the photocopies which he gave to me and my siblings. When I wrote to St. Louis requesting his military file papers, they came up empty.

Look in the US Army discharge to 'prove' this did not happen, by going page to page. IMHO, you need to find your document in the batch it belonged to.
