This is a case where one website may not be the answer. Two sources are
better than one anyway.
There are a number of books which document various ships, one New World
Immigrants: A Consolidation of Ship Passenger Lists by Michael Tepper is
one, but there is little genealogical information so if your ancestor is John
Smith, you have no way of knowing that it is your John Smith, even with an
uncommon surname.
Occasionally it will give an age or an occupation, but unless everything
matches, it may be a different John Smith. If however, it lists John Smith
age 30, blacksmith and wife Felicity age 28, children. Homer, David and
Theresa from Essex, you may have better luck.
Do a Google Books search for Emigration, Immigration or Early Settlers or
similar terms and you should come up with quite a few titles, many of
which are online. Some states also have lists of early arrivals to the
specific state. This search may need a trip to a good library. Not everything
is
online and some books are still under copyright.
Your local state historical society may also help.
