Lena,

I would add the following comments to those already made.

You do not say what version of Legacy you are using, if you haven’t updated for
17years, nor changed to newer versions then you could have problems. So I would
ensure that you are running the latest version on your PC – if it has been
sometime since you last updated then *do back-up* first.

I would also use the back-up for the transfer because it enables one to
transfer many other files than by just transferring the .fdb file - ensure that
all the back-up boxes are checked. Also note that Legacy recommends that it is
installed in the C: drive and the the zipped update would be saved in
C:\Legacy\Data. However, if you wish to transfer all your settings eg. colour
scheme, reports etc. you will need to transfer the .USR files - these you will
find in the Legacy folder (not a subfolder). These can be copied across to
overwrite the new (default) ones which the new version of Legacy will have
downloaded in C:\Legacy.

If you also have multimedia files, images etc. which you may wish to carry
across, then you will need to tell us pretty well where on your PC they are
stored at the moment and the Windows version of your laptop.

I suggest that you are better off transferring from Legacy on your PC, rather
than from your Ancestry Tree, unless, of course, you have much more data in
your Tree than you do on Legacy. The transfer from Ancestry Tree to Legacy via
a GEDCOM (which is how you would have to do it) is not without problems.

The following works on the Deluxe version. I assume it will work on the free
version.

While on your desktop open Legacy and create a backup file by going to File >
Backup Family File...

Legacy will create the backup family file in a compressed (Zipped) folder.

Transfer the compressed (Zipped) folder (i.e. the backup family file) to your
laptop via a jump drive (a.k.a. memory stick or thumb drive). You could even
email it to yourself if you do not have another way to move a file from your
desktop to your laptop.

Transfer the compressed (Zipped) folder onto your laptop. If you emailed it to
yourself, download the compressed (Zipped) folder from the email onto your
laptop.

While on your laptop open Legacy and go to File > Restore Family File... open
the compressed (Zipped) folder and you are in business.

Maybe some one else can verify this, but if I did this I would download the
free version to laptop first.

Then transfer your files from your computer via jump drive.

Then search for the files when you open legacy.

Sorry I can not explain better as I'm not on my computer

is it possible to download the free edition, I guess there is still one, on
the lap top and then down load my tree from ancestry.com into the program? or
what would some one suggest I do it easy and correctly?
  thank you.
