The German researchers will be able to open your family file, send them
a backup of your family file and the multimedia files. If you want to
only send a portion of your file (the line they potentially belong to
for example) you can export to a Legacy file under a new name. During
the export you can limit the records transferred. Make a backup of that
file and its multimedia.

Both the paid and free version use the same file format. With the paid
version you have extra features that they will not have access to but
they can open the file.

Of course all the data you have entered in English in Notes etc. will
still be in English in their copy. The German version displays screen
using German for the labels of fields and such but does not translate
user entered data.
