The "freebie" upgrade was historically given if you purchased the Deluxe was within x number of days (can't remember the exact number) prior to the release of the new version.
For years, the discount upgrade applied if you have the immediately previous version of Deluxe (for example, if you had v5 Deluxe, then you could get discount for v6) but that was changed to make the discount available to those who have previously purchased *any* Deluxe version. I don't know what the plans are for v8.
