Hi Ron, Thanks for your message. As mentioned in my message, I did try Check/Repair and other things several times with no luck.
With a little lateral thinking, I have now managed to cure the problem by firstly renaming the event to something that couldn't be confused with any other event [adding a new event then merging with the rouge one], then exporting the file to a Gedcom and examining the Gedcom to find where the erroneous event was being used. It turned out to be attached a marriage of a couple that didn't appear in the file index (for reasons unknown) but who were parents of a person I did have! I added the husband and wife and was then able to delete the erroneous event. Looks like there could be some sort of bug deep in the software.
