Two comments - Dave, that's true that you can't open the Family File in an earlier build or version once it's been converted, but if you really need to, you *can* create a gedcom in the most recent build and import it into the earlier one.
We haven't seen any problems with this update conversion, however it's always wise to make a backup before updating Legacy. In Legacy v8, you'll be given some very clear cut options to select when a conversion is necessary. I'd recommend that you all take the few seconds to do the backup!
