Orinda, You've kinda hijacked an ongoing thread - you might not get the responses you would based on the subject line and when you change the subject, it's always best to start a new email.
Are you referring to a Descendant Chart in Legacy Charting? Click on Appearances > Themes. The "Modern" theme doesn't have boxes but it does have lines to connect the people. If you're referring to the Descendant Chart in Legacy, on the main report window, click on Report Options > Format tab and deselect the options for boxes and for generation lines.
