I prefer to link the children to the correct parents first, then I am sure I will not lose them and I don't have to write their RIN numbers. The children can then be unlinked from the wrong family. Children can be linked to as many families as you want, but the program reminds you that they are already linked to another family. Just tell the program that is what you wish to do.
