Thank you to Brian, Ron and Wendy

I got hung up on backing up my Legacy file instead of saving it to dropbox.
Just clicking on “save family file as” and replacing the old file in Dropbox
does the trick, but I think that I will start dating each backup so that I can
revert to the previous saved version, just in case. I always back up to an
external hard drive and a flash drive which doesn’t stay in the house.

Thanks again, Al

Alan,

Let us first be clear about Legacy construction. What is called the Family file
has (as you said) the extension .fdb, this is an Access file and is saved by
Legacy on the fly. On leaving Legacy you are asked if you wish to backup Legacy
(this only happens if you have made changes) and it is this which creates the
.zip file, i.e. it is the backup and not the saved files.

To get your backup into Legacy you need to use File>Restore family file.

I use Dropbox on three PCs and as you know I need to create a Dropbox folder in
each PC – use the Dropbox help process. When I first started I put the latest
.fdb version in one, and it then opened in the others. As you rightly, and
importantly said, only have one open at any one time. Whilst some users
believe, and I tend to agree, using the .fdb files would be a bit dodgy when
used by different people, there would be no problem in using the backup, as I
have described, and putting it into each Legacy program as above.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Sharing Legacy in Dropbox

I can normally figure out computer problems but I am still stumped on sharing
Legacy using Dropbox.

I have no problem sharing files with Dropbox, as I do this frequently with my
clients. My problem is in working on Legacy with a cousin. We want to be able
to work on the same file, without having to do frequent mergers. I realize
that we will not be able to work on Legacy at the same time.

I can open the original file from Dropbox, as it is a .fdb file which Legacy
will open. But when I save the file back to Dropbox it is saved as a .zip
file. Using Windows 7, I can’t figure out how to open this file. How
should I save the Legacy file in Dropbox? Is it possible to save the file as
a .fdb instead of a .zip file?

Thank you, Al
